Harnessing Heat

Class Summary: The concept of temperature is perhaps one of the most talked about topics within the world of science. Throughout this course students will learn the ins and outs of heat and the transference of heat. Students will get the opportunity to participate in a number of hands-on experiments and activities with the use of tools such as thermal paper, ice cubes, and a heat gun. Towards the end of the course the children will get to use their sense of taste as they learn about melting sugar into cotton candy that they get to eat!

Educational Value: As humans we are exposed to various temperature elements throughout the course of our existence. Perhaps that is why it is important to learn all of the scientific facts behind temperature, and specifically heat in this case. This course introduces students to the concept of heat. The children will get to explore the various causes and levels associated with heat. In addition, students will learn how to use several instruments that are associated with heat and temperature, such as thermometers, heat guns, and thawing blocks.

This class includes the following experiments and activities:

Underwater Volcano

Hot Paper

Hot Blocks

Build a Thermometer

Copper Pipes

Have a Sand Blast

Testing the Relativity of Temperature

Cotton Candy!
