Scientist Spotlight: Benjamin Franklin

Jan 24, 2019 12:00 AM

It is not uncommon for parents to want their children to follow in the footsteps of great thinkers of the past. Although we would never dream of putting so much pressure on our children, by aiming for the stars they can surely land among them. One man that we would love to inspire our children is Benjamin Franklin.

Benjamin Franklin was a master in a lot of disciplines and often referred to as one of the founding fathers of the United States of America. He was highly regarded as a diplomat, inventor, author, activist, political theorist and a renowned scientist. His scientific knowledge and inventions have enhanced the lives of people all over the globe. So, let’s find out more about him…

His Most Celebrated Scientific Accomplishments

Benjamin Franklin embodies the pinnacle of success and remarkably managed to highly achieve in a number of disciplines. His scientific understanding, and his applications of science to produce world-changing inventions, is one of the best examples of his talents.

If you are reading these words using bifocals, you should be thanking Benjamin Franklin. Other impressive inventions he had a hand in are the lightning rod and a stove aptly named after himself, the Franklin stove.

His scientific knowledge did not just afford him the ability to help us read, keep us safe in storms and keep us warm. He also used his talents and intelligence to contribute to the American Enlightenment and our understanding of electricity. In fact, he advanced our knowledge of electrical currents so much that he received honorary degrees at multiple Ivory League universities.

Benjamin Franklin’s Early Years

Benjamin Franklin’s childhood was colorful to say the least. He had 16 siblings and had little schooling. He took it upon himself to educate himself to the lofty standards we already illustrated above.

However, he did manage to write for a local newspaper using the pseudonym “Mrs. Dogood”. One of his famous lines when using his pen name referred to free speech and the importance of people to be allowed the freedom to think critically. He then went on to help establish the concept of a subscription library and employed Louis Timothee, the first American librarian.
