Kids are using technology at younger ages these days. There are countless kinds of academic programs and apps that are on the market today. Many of these applications cover a wide range of subjects, including science. With new apps coming out every year, how do parents choose which apps are the best?

Below is a list of some the top-rated apps for the student in mind. For ease, the apps are separated according to age range.

These are the best apps for preschool age children through 9 years old.

Sid’s Science Fair App – This app appeals to younger children because Sid is the main character on the popular tv show, Sid the Science Kid. This is a great app that reinforces beginner’s science material,andit also incorporates some basic math skills with it. Kids learn how to read charts, as well as vocabulary concepts through pictures and sorting various items. One of the best features of this app that is praised by both teachers and parents alike is the time-lapse feature. This unique feature shows children how flower blooms, or a melting ice cube. The only downside to this app is that it has three games and could become boring to some kids. However, this is an excellent tool for parents and educators to use for children who have a learning disability or need more time understanding the lesson. How to Make Electricity App –This scientific app is an excellent way for children to gain a better understanding of how electricity works, and which components are used to generate electricity. Children can play the game and conduct their experiments using various materials within the app. Some of the materials include a light bulb, a pickle, a fan, and coils. The app encourages kids to experiment on their own which gives them much freedom to discover how electricity is created. The funny noises in the app make it enjoyable for kids. It also has a “science view” which allows children to see how an electrical current flows through their experiment. This will help them determine if they are making the correct choices during their investigation. Every time a youngster progresses in their experiment, the app rewards them with a bonus hint about the next step. School of Dragons: Alchemy Adventure App – This app is based on the favorite children’s movie, How to Train Your Dragon. According to, the puzzle games in this app encourage children to use their critical thinking skills. They can familiarize themselves with the Periodic Table of Elements and even have fun creating their compounds. There are 60 levels of this app. As the child progresses through the levels, they become more challenging. One distinctive feature that kids will especially like is that they can select their dragon, complete with unique characteristics all their own. This game is also interactive with Facebook in that kids can play with their friends. This app is free and is available on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, and Facebook and is recommended for ages 8 and up.

Monster Physics App–Teachers will love that this app meets many of the STEM requirements and reinforces the lessons taught in the classroom. Monster Physics App not only teaches physics and the mechanics of how things work, but it also helps kids exercise their critical thinking skills. Children will learn basic physics, such as mass and gravity, and they can also build a machine. If they opt to build a machine, kids have the freedom to choose all of the parts that are made available to them. Then, they test the device to see if and how it functions. If it doesn’t operate the way it should, they can analyze it and make the appropriate adjustments. A fantastic feature of this app is that it has tutorials to help kids learn along the way.
